Middle School
Admissions Grades 5-8

Integrating Core Academic Subjects with the Arts

Our Middle School builds on our Lower School’s effective integration of core academic subjects with the visual and performing arts, and actively prepares new adolescents for our challenging Upper School curriculum. As always, Quaker values of community, diversity, morality, stewardship, service, and the importance of social justice are integrated with a strong, exploratory academic curriculum.

The Middle School admissions process begins with the creation of a Ravenna account and submission of an online application.  Applicants for Grades 5-8 will be contacted to schedule an interview only if space becomes available. A non-refundable $100 application fee will be required to schedule the visit. Families can be contacted at any time throughout the admissions season, so we recommend submitting supplemental materials in a timely fashion and attending a school tour regardless of interview status.

Admissions Process

Spaces for new Middle School students in Grades 5-8 are based only on attrition and are very limited. We process applications for those limited places on a rolling basis. We recommend submitting your application and your child’s 2015-16 academic record as soon as possible. If we are able to consider your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview.

  1. Create a Ravenna profile. You’ll use Ravenna to register for a school tour, complete your online application and to submit all supplemental materials.  Required materials include the Student Supplement (which should be submitted at the time of the application, before the interview), English and math teacher evaluations, and transcripts.

  2. Schedule a testing date with the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). Brooklyn Friends School requires the ISEE for admission. Be sure to list Brooklyn Friends School (#330610) as a test result recipient.

  3. Wait to hear from us. If we are able to consider your application, we will contact families of 5th Grade applicants to schedule a classroom visit and invite 6th-8th Grade applicants for an interview. You will be asked to submit the non-refundable $100 application fee at that time. Please contact us for information about need-based fee waivers or reductions.

  4. If applicable, apply for Financial Aid. Learn more about financial aid for BFS here.

  5. Come for an accepted student visit. Students who are admitted to Grades 6-8 will be invited to visit BFS for a day before making a decision to enroll.

Legacy Status

If your family is eligible for legacy status, you are guaranteed an interview spot as long the application is received by December 9.

Rollover Admissions

If you submitted an application and fee for the Middle School for the 2016-17 school year and your application was not processed or you were placed on the waitlist, you may submit an application for the Middle School for the 2017-18 school year without paying the $100 application fee. If you are applying to a new division this year, the  fee is required after you are invited to schedule your interview.

Student Test Scores

Families must schedule an ISEE testing date with the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). Be sure to list Brooklyn Friends School (#330610) as a test result recipient. Results are due with your completed application materials.

If you think you may qualify for a fee reduction for testing, please contact our office to find out more about the possibility of receiving a testing waiver through ISAAGNY and ERB.
