Middle School
Admissions Grades 5-8

Integrating Core Academic Subjects with the Arts

Our Middle School builds on our Lower School’s effective integration of core academic subjects with the visual and performing arts, and actively prepares new adolescents for our challenging Upper School curriculum. As always, Quaker values of community, diversity, morality, stewardship, service, and the importance of social justice are integrated with a strong, exploratory academic curriculum.

Middle school begins in Fifth Grade but, class size increases from Fifth Grade to Sixth Grade.  Fifth, Seventh and Eighth Grade spaces are based on attrition. The Middle School admissions process for all applicants begins with the creation of a Ravenna account and the submission of an online application.

Applicants for Grades 5-8 will be contacted to schedule an interview if space becomes available. A non-refundable application fee will be required to schedule the visit.  We recommend submitting supplemental materials in a timely fashion and attending a school tour regardless of interview status as families can be invited to schedule an interview at any time throughout the season.

Admissions Process

We process applications submitted by the deadline for limited spaces and, if necessary, on a rolling basis. We recommend submitting your application through Ravenna and your child’s 2016-17 school record to us at admissions@brooklynfriends.org as soon as possible. If we are able to consider your application, we will contact you to schedule a visit and/or interview.

  1. Create a Ravenna profile. You’ll use Ravenna to register for a school tour, complete your online application and to submit all supplemental materials.  Required materials include the Student Supplement (which should be submitted before the interview), English and math teacher evaluations, and transcripts.

  2. Schedule a testing date with the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). Brooklyn Friends School requires the ISEE for admission. Be sure to list Brooklyn Friends School (#330610) as a test result recipient.

  3. Wait to hear from us.

    • For Grade 5: If we are able to consider your application, we will contact you to schedule a classroom visit and parent interview. The non-refundable $125 application fee is required before you interview.
    • For Grade 6: Invitations to schedule interviews will be sent via email to families beginning in September. The non-refundable $100 application fee is required before you interview.
    • For Grade 7 & 8: If we are able to consider your application, an invitation to schedule the interview will be emailed beginning in October. The non-refundable $100 application fee is required before you interview.

Please contact us for information about need-based fee waivers or reductions.

  4. If applicable, apply for Financial Aid. Learn more about financial aid for BFS here. (limited seats are available in 5th, 7th and 8th grades-add to application and Ravenna).

  5. Come for an accepted student visit. Students who are admitted to Grades 6-8 will be invited to visit BFS for a day before making a decision to enroll.
