Middle School
Admissions Grades 5-8

Integrating Core Academic Subjects with the Arts

Our Middle School builds on our Lower School’s effective integration of core academic subjects with the visual and performing arts, and actively prepares new adolescents for our challenging Upper School curriculum. As always, Quaker values of community, diversity, morality, stewardship, service, and the importance of social justice are integrated with a strong, exploratory academic curriculum.

Middle School begins in Fifth Grade. Grade size increases from Fifth Grade to Sixth Grade, and we welcome applications for these spaces. Fifth, Seventh and Eighth Grade spaces are very limited. The Middle School admissions process for all applicants begins with the creation of a Ravenna account and the submission of an online application.

Admissions Process

Grade 5: The process includes a classroom visit for the applicant and a parent interview. In addition to the online application, the applicant’s 2018-19 school transcript must be submitted by November 30. Applications submitted after the application deadline will be held and considered as space and time allow.

Families may be contacted at any time during the admissions season to schedule a classroom visit and parent interview, if space becomes available. Only applicant families who are invited to schedule a visit will be asked to pay the non-refundable $125 application fee. We strongly recommend submitting supplemental materials as soon as possible and attending a school tour.

Grades 6-8: The process includes a student and parent interview. All families who submit an online application by November 30 will be invited to schedule an interview. The non-refundable $100 application fee must be paid at the time the application is submitted.

Students who are admitted to the Middle School will be invited to visit BFS during the school day before families make a decision to enroll.

  1. Create a Ravenna profile. You will use Ravenna to register for a school tour, to complete your online application and to submit the application fee and all supplemental materials. Required materials include the Student Supplement (which should be submitted before the interview), teacher recommendation(s), transcripts, and the ISEE or SSAT entrance exam.

  2. Schedule a testing date. Brooklyn Friends accepts the ISEE or the SSAT. Only one of these exams is required for admission. Be sure to list Brooklyn Friends School (#330610 for ISEE, #1880 for SSAT) as a test result recipient.

  3. Wait to hear from us.

    • For Grade 5: If we are able to consider your application, we will contact you to schedule a classroom visit and parent interview. Families will be prompted to pay the fee at the time the visit is scheduled.
    • Grades 6-8: Invitations to schedule interviews will be sent via email to families beginning in September.

Please contact us for information about need-based fee waivers or reductions.

  4. If applicable, apply for Financial Aid. Learn more about financial aid for BFS here. (Please note that financial aid, if applicable, is also not assured for accepted applicants particularly for those applying to grades that are not entry points.)
