Solidarity in the Skies: Creativity Activity & Service (C.A.S.) with Puerto Rico

The Office of Service Learning & Civic Engagement and PAT Service Learning Committee are excited to host a collaborative art and education experience to support Puerto Rico entitled: Solidarity in the Skies: Creativity Activity & Service (C.A.S.) with Puerto Rico.

Date: Saturday, April 21st

Time: 2:00-5:00pm

Location: Lawrence Street Café

Students, families, and faculty/staff of all ages are invited to participate in BFS parent Carolina Della Valle’s Blue Skies Project, an initiative to paint cloudscapes and sell them to raise money for Para La Naturaleza, our partner organization in Puerto Rico. Carolina’s project was featured in this episode of the Life (starting at 2:30).

In addition, we are delighted to feature the voices of BFS parents Salomé Galib, Bill Weir, Cathie Mahon, and BFS student Bella Gonzalez, as well as historian Jorge Silva-Puras who have been engaged in work around Puerto Rico. They will be speaking as part of a Teach-In session on the current state of the island. This will be held concurrently from 3-4:30pm.

Students and family members of all ages will come together at Lawrence Street to:

  • Create cloudscape paintings in the Café
  • Read children’s books about Puerto Rico in the Library
  • Participate in the Teach-In session in the Conference Room

Participant Feedback:

I just wanted to let you know that today’s event is probably the nicest one that I’ve gone to at BFS.  I wish I had known how great it would be–I would have been more active in recruiting others…Everything was so well done.  We all had so much fun painting (Carolina is such a kind and warm person), the food was phenomenal, the info really important.  I love that they had upper school students read to the little kids so that everyone could be involved (even those new to the school).  And I’m grateful that it is raising money for Puerto Rico. This event should be a model for others at BFS. Thank you!!! – Jennifer, BFS Parent

Carolina della Valle shared the following:

“What a fantastic day! Yesterday meant so much!  I loved seeing the students’ passion for painting blue skies, no matter what age!  I collected over 100 paintings and raised almost $700 [for Para La Naturaleza]! Not bad for a few hours! I’ve posted about it on my instagram. The student paintings will be shown and available for purchase next weekend at Dumbo Open Studios as well.

Many thanks to BFS parent Nina Broeer for photographing the event!
