Math Enrichment Opportunities for Middle Schoolers
Dear Middle School Families,
The BFS Math Department is excited to share two upcoming math enrichment opportunities for Middle School students—Math League and MathCounts. These programs are designed to challenge students, deepen their problem-solving skills, and celebrate their enthusiasm for mathematics.
Math League
Open to: All students in Grades 5–8
The Math League is a math competition that aims to enrich, motivate, and recognize students for their mathematical achievements. Each contest focuses on grade-level-appropriate content. For example, 6th graders will participate in the 6th-grade contest, and so on.
Format:
Grade 5: 30 multiple-choice questions of varying difficulty
Grades 6–8: 35 multiple-choice questions of varying difficulty
Timing: Students will have 30 minutes to complete the contest and may use a calculator.
Schedule:
Practice sessions will take place every Thursday during recess. The actual contest will be held after school at BFS:
5th grade: mid-April
6th–8th grade: mid-February
Exact dates will be confirmed as we get closer to the event.
Notes:
Participation is optional, and the contest is meant to be fun—not a test. There is no “passing” or “failing” score. In grades 6–8, only a few students typically score as high as 24 points (80% correct), and students who score around 14 points (half of that) deserve praise for their effort and achievement.
MathCounts
Open to: Students in Grades 6–8
BFS is excited to return for our second year participating in this national middle school mathematics competition. MathCounts promotes achievement through engaging, collaborative problem-solving.
Team Selection: A total of 14 students will represent BFS—10 competing individually and 4 as a team.
Selection Criteria: Students will be chosen based on:
- Math class performance
- Fall MAP scores
- Teacher recommendation
- Consistent attendance at practice sessions
Schedule: Practice sessions every Thursday during recess.
Competition date: February 2, 2026, at a designated Brooklyn school (details to follow).
Families of selected students will receive additional information as we approach the competition date.
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging our students to explore and enjoy mathematics. If your child is interested in participating in any or both competitions, please fill out this Google form. .
Warm regards,
The Middle School Math Team
