Legacy Information

Dear BFS Families,

As we prepare for the upcoming admissions season, we anticipate another year of strong interest in the Family Center and Brooklyn Friends School. In effort to provide the highest level of attention to legacy* families, it is essential for us to know about legacy children who will be applying to Brooklyn Friends School or the Family Center at Brooklyn Friends for September 2018.

Our school’s commitment to small class size and the increased demand for those limited spaces has challenged our ability to enroll all legacy applicants. In addition, Family Center, Preschool Threes and Kindergarten are program entry points; admissions for all other grades are based on attrition and maintaining diverse balance in each class. Therefore, it is very important that you let us know as soon as possible if you are planning to apply. We also strongly recommend that you fully consider a range of options for your child should the Family Center or Brooklyn Friends School not be a possibility.

Early Notification Option for 2s, 3s, 4s, and Kindergarten
If you will be applying to the Family Center, Preschool or Kindergarten, we encourage you to consider the Early Notification option. This permits us to process your application sooner than external candidates and to notify you of our decision earlier than other applicants. If you decide to take advantage of this option, the expectation is that if the child is accepted the child will attend the Family Center or Brooklyn Friends School. It is also expected, if applicable, that the child’s sibling or faculty or staff parent will be at BFS for the 2018-19 school year. Should we need to take more time to better get to know your child, we’ll offer an appropriate decision in February 2018, at the same time the general pool of applicants is notified. Should you not choose Early Notification, you can still apply as part of the regular admissions process.

Please notify us of your intentions by email as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, June 30th.

In Friendship,
Sara Soll
Director of the Family Center Twos Program

Karine Blemur-Chapman
Director of All-School Enrollment (Preschool through Grade Twelve)

*What is a legacy?

To receive legacy consideration, students must be:

Children of alumni: applicants whose parents(s) graduated from the 12th grade at BFS

Children of faculty & staff: applicant’s parent(s) must be currently employed at BFS and will be employed the following school year

Members of the Religious Society of Friends: parents of the applicant must be members of the New York Quarterly Meeting
(Quaker families who are members of other Meetings will be given legacy consideration after the members of the NY Quarterly Meeting but will not be eligible for early notification)

FOR FAMILY CENTER APPLICANTS ONLY: Legacy status and the early notification option is extended to families who have previously enrolled a sibling of the applicant in the Family Center.
