BFS Proudly Celebrates Latinx Heritage

Brooklyn Friends School is thrilled to recognize and celebrate Latinx Heritage month, a vibrant and vital recognition of the rich cultural tapestry of Latinx communities in the United States. This month-long celebration serves as a reminder for the influence, resilience, and contributions of Latinx people to American society.

From fighting for civil rights and labor equality to championing immigrant rights and educational access, Latinx activists have been at the forefront of creating lasting change. Latinx Heritage Month is a time to honor the diverse diaspora, encompassing a multitude of countries, languages and traditions. At Brooklyn Friends, we highlight the impact that Latine individuals have had on the arts, science, politics, sports, and more, as well as their unwavering dedication to social justice.

With our theme this year of Activism and Power, we wanted to highlight several important figures. These include César Chávez, a civil rights activist and labor leader who fought for the rights of farmworkers; Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Others like Dolores Huerta, an activist for farmworkers’ rights, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the musical Hamilton, and Sylvia Rivera with Marsha P. Johnson who fought for gay and transgender communities in New York City, focusing on issues like homelessness and employment. All representing change makers in social justice, arts, and culture.

Quakerism and Hispanic Heritage Month share the spices of community and equality, while being rooted in social justice. Many Hispanic Quakers, particularly in Latin America, have championed peace, human rights, and inclusivity which speaks to their values. Celebrating this month and the contributions of Latine people honors our school’s ideals of dignity, integrity, and respect for all people.

Let’s come together to reflect on their impact, celebrate their resilience, and continue the work toward a more just and equitable future for all.

All are welcome to celebrate with us at the all school community dinner on Friday, October 18 at 5:30pm. More details to come.
