JM_BFS-5564The BFS Girls Varsity Basketball Team lost to York Prep 35-32 on the road. It was the team’s final game of the season. The girls had a great time enjoying their bus ride to the game. They have come a long way and have really grown throughout the season. This game was a culmination of their season. The team came out with an unprecedented energy and vigor. The ball seemed to bounce BFS’ way up until the very end. The girls got off to a great start and battled throughout. By far it was their best game of the season as they put forth everything they leaned to work. Their opponent was not going to give in and kept battling and making runs of their own, but BFS maintained their composure and the lead until the very end. BFS was up 32-31 with two minutes to play (we played 30 fantastic minutes) when York Prep knocked down a second three pointer out of nowhere to take their first lead of the game.  BFS had their chances. The team missed some easy ones and once again struggled on the free throw line.  “Free throws win games”.  BFS was 1-6 from the foul line during the final quarter (3-11 for the game). The girls remained composed even though the York Prep gym was rocking and rolling. BFS called timeout with 8.2 left (35-32 York Prep) after coming up short on the offensive end but created a key turnover on the defensive end. The Coach set up the play. We had been in this position a few times with a chance to win the game late and the girls were ready for the challenge as they have all season. BFS ran the play to perfection as they have in these close games. We got the shot we wanted. Last time in a similar situation the shot was right on target but just short, this time the shot was right on target, but just long. You win some, you lose some. But in my book this was a Team victory. I was and am so proud of this team. You had to be there. Junior Silvely A. did it all and led the way with 16 points, while fellow junior Ivy L. did everything she could and contributed with 7 points of her own. Sophomore Rosemary D-L-C knocked down two key jumpers during the third quarter to keep BFS in the lead. Fellow sophomore Kasey J. had a basket early in the game and junior Lexi S. had a key basket during the third quarter. Xianna has been tremendous the last few games bring aggressive, playing great defense, and rebounding the ball. Thanks to Sierra for attending the final game (she was on the injured list). Thanks for the memories – Seniors Sierra V. and Xianna Q. will be missed. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the team’s success. Blue Pride – Sierra V., Xianna Q., Silvely A., Ivy L., Naomi M., Monet M., Lexi S., Arielle V-D-E, Rosemary D-L-C, Kasey J., Jonae O., Lili M., and Coach Lydia. Can’t wait until next year. See you then. Blue Pride Runs Deep, Friends Forever!!

On Thursday the BFS MS Girls Basketball Team defeated Churchill 36-34 in the lower gym. It was the team’s final home game of the season. Churchill also came into the game undefeated in ISAL league play and on top of the standings with BFS. They proved to be a very tough opponent. BFS was led by eighth grade center Salma M.’s precision shooting, which carried the team.  Fellow eighth grader Libby S. came up big knocking down some key shots early in the game. Fellow eighth grade starters Jesse R., Kaley B., and Kennedy W. contributed to the solid hard fought victory. The bench stepped in when needed. It is great to have so many players and options during the game and throughout the season. BFS pulled away with 3 minutes left in the game but Churchill came charging back, only to lose by 2 points. Their three point attempt at the buzzer came up just short. The Lady Panthers improved their record to very impressive 12-0. They will conclude their season on Wednesday at local rival Packer. Blue Pride!!

The BFS MS Boys Basketball Team defeated Churchill 45-41 on the road. Baker’s Dozen, ISAL League Champions (undefeated), Undefeated Season…To be determined. The team was focused on their ultimate goal of winning the ISAL League Championship (undefeated) as they traveled to Manhattan to take on the also undefeated Churchill School.

With a league title, an undefeated season on the line, and the best opponent the league has to offer you would expect the team to be nervous. But the boys were the picture of poise. BFS jumped out to a 12-3 lead before Churchill could get their feet under themselves and score seven straight points to pull to within two. The game was defined by that kind of play. BFS would build a seven or eight point lead and Churchill would make a run and close the gap. In the end however the Panthers depth and ability to deal with the press helped to secure a 45-41 win. The game’s defining moment came in the fourth quarter with 35 seconds left on the clock. Churchill came up with a steal and sent their best player streaking toward the basket for what would be a game tying layup… But Jack B. sprinted back on defense and beat his man to the spot below the basket where he took a hard offensive foul. In doing so he preserved the lead and got possession back to BFS with 30 seconds on the clock. The team was led offensively by the eighth grade starting back court of Ty S. with 12 points and Jack B. with 8 points. Max B. (8th) and Mirembe M-T (7th) each chipped in with 6 points. Nicholas M. (7th) led the way on the boards with seven rebounds. Along with his scoring Ty also led the way in assists with five. The win improves the teams overall record to 13-0, clinches the ISAL league title, and gets the team one step closer to a perfect season. The team takes the court next Wednesday at home against local rival Packer and then again on Thursday where they will finish out the season at home against Bay Ridge Prep. Blue Pride!!

On Wednesday the Boys JV Basketball Team defeated Friends Seminary 42-30 on the road. Defense, Defense, Defense. That was the calling card of the team during this game. Keeping their opponent from taking good shots and forcing them to take many tough shots, while also cleaning the up the glass with authority. The team was led by some slick shooting from newcomer Jailen L. who finished with 10 points and beat the shot clock twice to keep the momentum rolling for BFS. Not too far behind was fellow newcomer and starting point guard Kobe C. who grabbed just as many rebounds as points ending up with 7 and was a force on defense end. Coming off the bench and being the spark he needed to be, Kwesi C-S added in 9 points for the Panthers. Others such as Luca J. added in 7 points and some great moves around the basket. While Zain O. and Oliver S-P chipped in with 5 and 4 points, respectively. It was a great team win. Keep up the great work and finish the week strong.

Also on Wednesday, the MS Boys Basketball Team defeated Leman Prep 42-24 on the road. The team took a short trip over the bridge and came away with a huge win in their second outing of the season. Due to school related music performances the team (usually 18 students) was cut in half and went short handed with only nine players to Lehman. Those “Non-stop Nine” came away with a really impressive victory for their second win (and second road win) of the young season. Each of the nine saw extended minutes and for many of them made the most of it. Some opening the eyes of the coaches and fans in attendance. The team was led offensively by the eighth grade veterans. Lewis W. (8th) led the way with 9 points while Aja M. (8th) scored 8 and Coby W. (8th) added 7 points. All nine players scored at least 1 point during the game. Along with his eight points Aja completely dominated the glass as he pulled in a game high 15 rebounds. As always rebounding was a total team effort and the Panthers pulled down a total of 48 rebounds while playing at a considerable height disadvantage.

Another Wednesday win went to the MS Girls Basketball Team, defeated Leman Prep 22-12 in the lower gym. The team got off to a slow start versus their opponent — the offense came slow but defense was tight from the onset. The newcomers came off the bench and held the opponents until our veterans (8th graders) got back in the game and defense and offense worked well together. the veterans (8th graders) were able to put together a string of baskets led by Kaley B., Libby S., & Salma M., Jessie R. and Kennedy W. helped anchor the attack. Jessie controlling the boards, while Kennedy pressuring the ball.

Our basketball teams had five victories on Friday. The Girls Varsity Basketball Team defeated Garden School  24-6 on the road. The team was looking to pick up a win going into the winter break.  Both teams got off to a slow start, a real slow start.  BFS found themselves up 5-2 after one quarter of play. Ivy L. and Kasey J. each scored a basket, while Silvely A. hit a free throw. Both team continued to struggle during the second quarter as both baskets seemed to have a lid on them. But both team continued working to score and both teams were smiling as some of there shots rolled in and out. Ivy scored another basket and Kasey made a free throw. So it was 8-4 at the half in BFS’ favor. The team needed to pick it up in the second half and they did. They turned up the defense and started to move the ball a little better on offense. Senior Sierra V. scored her first basket of the game, followed by another basket by Ivy, and Silvely scored her first basket of the game.  BFS held their opponent scoreless during the third quarter with some very nice solid defense. Going into the final quarter BFS had a ten pint lead (14-4). Sierra and Ivy each scored again, while Naomi M. and Rosemary D-L-C scored their first baskets of the game. The intensity picked up during the third quarter and carried over into the fourth quarter. It was nice to see the team step up during the second half and pick up the much important league victory going into the break. Ivy led the way with 8 points, followed by Sierra with 4 points. Blue Pride!!

He ran the 300M race which was second to last in the meet before the relays. We had to wait around until late in the evening before his event. It turned out that the wait was well worth it. Based on his time in this event from two years ago, he was seeded 2nd in the first heat. He lowered that time by 3 seconds with a time of 39.71. He placed second in his heat and second overall out of a field of 44 total runners. Well done for his first meet of the season…. Blue Pride!!
