Family Center

The Family Center at Brooklyn Friends School is an early childhood program designed to meet the developmental needs of two-year-old children. In a nurturing, child-centered environment children begin to discover the world outside home and family and learn about themselves in the context of a community of peers.

Play is the essential work of childhood and an important part of developing cognitive, emotional, and problem-solving skills. In a day’s work the children build, climb, cook, run, paint, dance, share, listen, and laugh. Our program supports each child’s learning style and developmental readiness where children feel safe and free to explore the world around them.

Family Center is the first entry point for new students joining Brooklyn Friends School. We welcome applications for these limited spaces. The admissions process for the Family Center program begins with the creation of a Ravenna account and the submission of an online application with the application fee.

Admissions Process

All Family Center children need to be two years old by September 1 in the year they start school.

Families who apply by the November 1 application deadline will be contacted about next steps. Applications submitted after November 1 will be held in the event additional interview spots become available. We recommend submitting supplemental materials in a timely fashion and attending an open house regardless of interview status as families can be invited to schedule an interview at any time throughout the season. Only applicants who are invited to schedule an interview will be asked to pay the $100 application fee.

It may be necessary to submit an application prior to visiting Brooklyn Friends School as most open houses will take place after the submission deadline.

  1. Create a Ravenna profile. You will use Ravenna to register for an open house, to complete your online application, and to submit the $100 application fee and a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport.

  2. Wait to hear from us. Invitations to schedule interviews will be sent via email to families beginning in September.

Legacy Admissions

If your family is eligible for legacy status, you will be invited to schedule an interview as long as the application is received by November 1. Early Notification is available for legacy applicants to Family Center, Preschool Threes and Preschool Fours. The expectation for families who choose Early Notification is that if the child is accepted, the child will attend Brooklyn Friends School.
