All That Dwell in the Light: BFS Decades Through Personal Recollections

RSVP Here

“All That Dwell in the Light” is an oral history and archival project conducted by students Lily Edelman ’20 and Salma McLaughlin ’20 as well as history educator Rebecca Krucoff and graphic designer Carl Petrosyan. In the spring of 2017 the students conducted videotaped interviews of five alumni from the 1940s through the 1980s as well as worked in the Brooklyn Friends School archives. The students, Rebecca, and Carl created a museum-quality exhibition that we are proud to share with our school community and all of Brooklyn.

We look forward to sharing the complete exhibition at a community celebration at the Brooklyn Historical Society on January 29, 2018. In the meantime, please enjoy the preview clips and materials from the exhibition below.

“…We had a printing club, which had an effect on me because
I’ve spent my life in journalism. I don’t remember how much
the press cost, but it was a hand- and foot- operated press.
The club had a very limited membership… I remember it very
fondly and I’m also fond of the fact that [none] of us caught
our fingers in the press.” – Henry Altman ’40

Henry is second from the left in the 1938 photo of the printing club above.
