Students Perform Section of Ailey’s ‘Revelations’
On Wednesday, February 23, the Third Grade took over the Pearl Street Lobby to perform at a virtual Lower School assembly. In dance, Third Grade students learned about Alvin Ailey and were taught choreography from the first section of his most famous dance piece “Revelations.” This piece touches on the experience and resilience of African Americans in the US. The themes highlighted in class were community, synergy, inner strength and working towards a common goal. In addition, students are using some of the Lester Horton dance vocabulary they learned from the previous unit. Mr. Ailey was a student and dance company member of Lester Horton before he started the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. The song used for this dance was “I’ve Been ‘Buked” by Traditional – Derek Lee Ragin, Moses Hogan & Moses Hogan Singers. “I’ve Been ‘Buked” is a negro spiritual that is one of the songs Alvin Ailey used for “Revelations.”
