April 22nd Advocacy Day in Albany to H.A.L.T. Solitary Confinement

11th Grader Patonya P. and 10th grader Emmitt S. volunteered to participate in the April 22nd Advocacy Day in Albany with Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC) in support of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act. Joining a powerful, diverse group of 120 advocates from throughout New York State (including several local Quakers), Patonya and Emmitt participated in 3 of the 80 legislative appointments held with our elected officials. They advocated strongly for an end to the torture and cruel and unusual punishment happening in jails and prisons in the state and in New York City through the practice of solitary confinement. With an educational event to start out the day, they ended the day with a rally on the Million Dollar Staircase of the Capitol, demanding an end to the torture of solitary confinement in New York prisons and jails.
