March Is Healthy Relationships Month at BFS
As a part of our ongoing investment in our Wholeness and Well-being pillar work, we are excited to share that March will be Healthy Relationships Month at Brooklyn Friends School. Building on last year’s Middle and Upper School focus, this year’s work will extend across all learning communities, engaging students throughout the month. Programming will take place in spaces such as advisory, collections, and Meeting for Worship queries, with opportunities for cross-divisional connection. Colleagues will also participate in a “Spring Into Wellness” experience focused on nurturing healthy relationships with ourselves. Grounded in our commitment to community and well-being, this month invites us all to reflect on how we care for ourselves and one another.
8th Grade Explores Climate Justice
Recently, our 8th graders deepened their study of climate justice through an inspiring conversation with attorney Catherine Amirfar (P ’28, ’30), who shared her work representing small island nations on the front lines of climate change. Students learned about a recent landmark international court victory that will help hold major polluting countries accountable—a powerful example of how advocacy, law, and global cooperation can advance justice.

Thanks to a Great Giving Day, Ice Pops For All!
Thanks to the way our amazing community showed up on BFS Giving Day, every single BFS student and colleague received an ice pop on Friday at lunch time. In all, 579 families, alumni, colleagues, grandparents, friends, and even a few students, contributed $579,045, to sustain our commitment to financial aid, invest in professional development, and enhance the academic, artistic, athletic, and community experiences that define who we are. The strength of BFS lies in our collective impact. Thank you for all you do for BFS!
BFS Social Justice Incubator Expands to Middle School
The Office of Global Social Impact is excited to share with the community that a version of the Social Justice Incubator now lives in the Middle School. The Social Justice Incubator program provides a framework and guidance to students in developing uniquely designed projects to sustainably address the most pressing local, national and global challenges. Last year’s cohort and this year’s cohort in the Upper School have created and continue to work on incredible social impact projects addressing a wide range of global and local issues. In partnership with an organization, Generation Citizen, whose mission and values are so closely aligned with ours at BFS, Allison Ward and Ángel Soba are co-leading a PEP that mirrors the Social Justice Incubator where they design and carry out sustainable social impact projects. This will be a great opportunity for students to learn more critically and deeply about their individual communities and our school community, while utilizing a research-oriented and design-thinking approach to address the most pressing global and local issues. We had a very successful first class on Friday and are so excited to share in the future the incredible student work that will come of this.
GSI Director to Present at National Conference
BFS’ Director of Global Social Impact, Kevin Murungi, will be presenting at the Partnership of Schools with Public Purpose (PSPP) Annual Conference in Charlotte, in North Carolina on Friday, March 6. PSPP is a network of educators and non-profits dedicated to fostering equity, justice, and innovation in education, often through collaborative projects and professional development. They focus on building capacity, connecting schools, and supporting community-centered practices to dismantle systemic inequities. Kevin’s presentation will be on Teaching and Learning for Social Justice, Global Engagement and Impact.
BFS Celebrates Women’s History Month
March marks the start of Women’s History Month, a time to honor the historical contributions of women in our society, and also the strength of women among us today. Here at Brooklyn Friends School, we want to honor the many different women in our communities who empower students and continue to represent the full spectrum of what it means to be a strong woman role model. The National Women’s History Alliance has designated the theme of “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” We invite members of our community to sit with the query of “How can we make small changes today to contribute to a sustainable future of gender equity?” Guided by our Quaker SPICES and informed by our pillars of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging, Global Social Impact, and Wholeness and Well-being:
We invite you to pause and consider:
- How can I support the wholeness and well-being of the women in my community?
- How can I challenge and interrogate my definition of a “woman’s” identity?
- How can I make space for a global lens around how womanhood and femininity are understood outside of a US context?

BFX Week 8: Creativity, Courage, and Community
The blizzard may have wiped away our Monday, but there was still an abundance of creativity, courage, and community spirit in week 8 of the BFX winter/spring term. The Early Childhood classes used movement cues to practice bravery in Puppet Play & Storytelling. They also reveled in the melting snow of rooftop play. Bianca’s Mixed Media Arts II Xploration highlighted the week for our K/1st classes. The students capped off Black History Month by creating tape resist paintings showing the beauty and intricacy of African textile designs. Students also showed off their vertical jumps in Body Moves BK. 2nd/3rd grade classes continued their book projects in Artistic Storytelling and shared instrumental pieces, including Theo’s mini-synthesizer, in Glee Club II. In the 4th/5th/6th grade class, River’s Artists & Techniques Xploration continues to amaze. Check out photos from week 8 at the link.
