On Monday the BFS MS Soccer team recorded their third win of the season with a 3-2 win over Churchill down at Red Hook. BFS put their opponents under pressure early on, although they had to wait a while for an opening. That arrived midway through the first half, when seventh Peter H.’s pass found eighth grader Ben F. in space, who converted from close range (19th minute). BFS were two up at halftime courtesy of an excellent combination of play between the Francis twins (Ben & Sam). An out-swinging corner from Ben was met by Sam F., who fired the ball past the Churchill goalie (22nd minute). Shortly after halftime, BFS was three up. The ubiquitous Isaac H. closed down the the Churchill defense, and having won the ball he charged into the penalty area, and shot low into the bottom corner (32nd minute). BFS withstood a period of pressure from their opponents, who scored two late goals. The final score of 3-2 made it sound a lot closer than it was on another good day for the middle school soccer team.

On Thursday the BFS MS Soccer team cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Birch Wathen Lenox School down at Red Hook. Like the previous game, it took BFS a while to find their stride but it wasn’t long before they began to force some opportunities in front of goal. Eighth grader Julian S-B shot over from close range, and eighth grader Mali A. forced the goalkeeper into making a good save. However, it was Julian who opened the scoring midway through the first half. He raced into the penalty area, then fired an unstoppable shot to the far post in the 18th minute. Seventh grader Peter H. doubled the lead before halftime (29th minute) and BFS were looking comfortable from there on. In the second half, BFS scored two goals (38th & 42 minute) through Peter H. who capped a fine display with his first hat-trick of the season. He also moved to top scorer for the season, but it was a very well disciplined team performance. Mali assisted Peter on the two second half goals. Also, just as importantly, it was the first shut out for BFS this season. Everyone worked hard to ensure this happened, and it was something the players had been working hard on in practice. Overall, it was a very satisfying win for BFS
