Game Highlights for the Week of Jan. 7, 2013

On Monday the BFS Boys JV Basketball team defeated SIA 64-53 on the road to pick up another ACIS League win.  Trailing 9-0 to start the game off, the Panthers went on a 23-5 run to end the half. Freshman Anthony B. led the team in scoring.  Knocking down all of his free throws during the game.  The win was a big one, as BFS bounced back from a devastating league loss to Friends Seminary, to end 2012.

The BFS MS Boys Basketball team defeated  York Prep 35-26 on the road to pick up an ISAL League victory.  This was their first game back after the winter break.  The Panthers overwhelmed York as their front court players dominated the glass pulling in rebound after rebound.  Whether it was eighth graders Philip C, Isaac H, Maalik D, Julien S.B, or Sam F, it seemed like the Panthers got a hand on every rebound.  Offensively the team was led by Philip who scored 19 points and fellow eighth grader Charlie S. who added 10 for BFS.

The BFS Boys & Girls Indoor Track teams trekked up to the 168th St. Armory to compete on the world renowned New Balance track.  The site has hosted meets for world class event.  It is a great opportunity and experience for our runners to race on such wonderful conditions.  The star of the meet was actually an 8th grader, Mali A.  She was undaunted by the move up to the varsity program.  Mali won her heat of the 600M with an excellent time of 1:51.1(4th place overall).  This result was one of the best of all the runners for the evening competition.  Mali took the race out with the confidence and command of a veteran and led the race from wire to wire.  Later in the evening she ran a nice 300M for a second place finish in her heat (47.59-17th place).  It was a wonderful coming out party for Mali’s entree to High School competition.  On the Boys side senior Jose U. continued his fine running for the indoor track team.  He put in gutsy performances in his 600M (1:46.78-24th place) and 300M (43.58-17th place) races.  The showing was particularly rewarding given the limited work accomplished during the winter break.  Along with Jose, fellow senior Nick E. ran his first indoor meet.  In spite of Nicks unfamiliarity with the banked and tight turns of the Armory track, he ran a nice 300M.  It looks like Nick has the track bug and will join us for a few more big competitions.  Blue Pride!!

The BFS MS Girls Basketball team defeated Garden 29-10 in the lower gym to pick up their first league victory in their first league game, as they extended their winning streak to three games.  The lady panthers got of to a quick start with the help of many different players.  BFS got contributions from Halima M, Naima B, and Fiona B, who scored her first points of the season in the first quarter to take an impressive 17-0 lead.  The lady panthers defense seemed to be too strong for the Garden School allowing only four points in the first half and having a 24-4 lead at halftime.  They will look to continue their winning ways when they take on Dwight School next Thursday.  Great game girls keep the wins coming!

The BFS MS Boys Basketball team needed extra time to pick up their fourth win of the season, and their second league win in as many days.  After leading by as much as ten points in the fourth quarter against Garden School on the road, it took a floor length pass from eighth grader Charlie S. to fellow eighth grader Philip C. for the only basket of overtime period and the thrilling 32-30 victory.  The two points in overtime capped off a season high 23 point performance by Philip.  Charlie, added 6, Noah R. chipped in with 2 and Julien S-B added 1 for BFS.  Blue Pride!!

On Friday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team came to play as they defeated UNIS 34-16 on the road in a non-league game.  BFS got off to a great start as junior guard Julia G. knocked down the teams first shot, a three pointer.  Senior guard Janna J. had 8 points in the quarter to give BFS an impressive 11-0 start.  The team continued to play well on both ends of the court.  Their defense helped to create some easy baskets during the first half.  Janna added four more points in the second quarter, while sophomore Julia B. had three points, and senior Danielle east added a basket for BFS.  The second half started just as good for BFS, as the defense created easy lay-ups on the other end of the court.  Janna added three more quick baskets for 6 more points (18 for the game) and rested the rest of the game.  Senior guards Sidney A. and Rayvin T. handled the ball and played solid defense up top as BFS fell into a two three zone during the second half of the game.  Senior Herron H. and junior Chloe B. played solid defense and made some very nice passes throughout the game setting up their teammates.  Julia B. added six more points in the second half and senior Danielle E. finished off the scoring with a sweet baseline jumpshot.  It was a great win for the team going into the weekend as their gear up for two very important league games next week.

The BFS Boys JV Basketball team defeated Léman Prep 60 to 26 in the lower gym.  The Panthers big three, freshman Anthony B. led the team with 19 points, fellow freshman Quran D. added 14 points, while controlling the fast tempo pace of the game, and sophomore Thomas C. chipped in with 10 points, while controlling the boards with his aggressive play.  The team is now an impressive 7-1.  Blue Pride!!

The BFS Boys Varsity Basketball team came away with a 57-43 victory against Leman Prep in the lower gym.  The Panthers led from the start to finish.  The team was sparked by the play of senior Jared L., scoring 26 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots, while junior Adam G. scored 14 points and had 3 steals.  Also making an impact was junior guard Nathan J., who had a good all around game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.  The play of the game was made when Leman was starting to make a run and with five seconds left, the Panthers executed an inbounds play as senior Theo E., hit a 18 foot jump shoot at the buzzer at the end of the 3rd quarter to help the team build momentum going into the 4th and final quarter.  The senior backcourt of Avery M., and Olabanji S., helped the Panthers with great perimeter defense and stabilizing the offense.  Avery chipped in with 2 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds.  Olabanji added 6 rebounds and 5 assists for BFS.  It was a great team effort.  Blue Pride!!
