On Tuesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated LFNY 30-24 on the road. The team just picked up an exciting come from behind victory against LFNY last week at BFS. This game was a different story. BFS came to play during the first quarter. The team had five different members score during a season high eighteen point performance during the first quarter of action. As a coach I still didn’t think they played their best basketball or brought their full energy or intensity to that first quarter. BFS maintained the impressive play in the second quarter by continuing to play solid defense and holding their opponent to four total points in the quarter. LFNY changed their defense and did a much better job stopping the BFS offensive attack. Senior Janna J. who had 10 points during that impressive first quarter run was held to just three free throws during the second quarter. BFS did manage seven more points to take a 25-10 lead into the halftime break. LFNY continued to battle as they outscored BFS 6-3 in third quarter to close with in double digits. BFS continued to struggle on offense missing some good look jumpers including some open three pointers, as well as a few lay-ups and free throws. LFNY closed with six points during the final quarter but BFS managed to play solid defense throughout the entire game and stayed out of real foul trouble. By holding on for the win, BFS improved to 7-2 in league play and 10-3 overall. All seven active players contributed to the team victory. BFS was once again led by senior sensation Janna J. who got the game off on the right foot with 10 points in the first quarter and finished with a total of seventeen points (764 career) and three steals. Sophomore Julia B. who has been playing really well lately added 5 points and some great defense. Junior point guard Julia G. chipped in with 4 points, while seniors Herron H. and Danielle E. added a basket each for BFS. No time to celebrate this one, BFS will be back at it tomorrow versus second place league opponent LREI at BFS. Hopefully we can get off to another great start. Blue Pride!!
On Wednesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated LREI 39-23 in the lower gym. LREI came into the game with only one league loss. BFS once again got off to a great start with their defense creating offense. BFS found themselves up 12-0 before LREI made a free throw to close out the first quarter. Senior sensation Janna J. scored 8 points in the first quarter, while fellow senior leader Herron H. and sophomore Julia B. chipped in with two points each. BFS maintained their solid play during the second quarter. The team was able to open up a 19-2 lead with four more points by Janna and three more free throws from Julia B. LREI knocked down a three pointer with less than ten seconds left in the quarter to cut it to 19-5 and give them some momentum going into the half. LREI came out strong in the second quarter scoring a couple early baskets to get back into the game at 19-9. BFS bounced back and Janna added five more points, while junior point guard Julia G. made a free throw (her only point for the game) to finish the third quarter with a 25-13 lead. No lead is ever enough in these games. LREI came roaring back as BFS did not start the final quarter with the energy it needed to close things out. LREI made a nice run and got with four points at 25-21, coach was nervous, but BFS called a timeout and regrouped. BFS had to get back to playing solid defense and trying its best to take care of the basketball during LREI’s pressure defense, and they did. Before you know BFS was playing better and LREI was fouling BFS and sending them to the foul line. Free throws are extremely important and the girls were putting points on the board by making them (13-24 for the game). They made six out of twelve during the final quarter. The defense continued to be strong. Janna was attacking the basket and finished with a game and season high of 27 points, plus 6 steals). BFS went on a 14-2 run to close things out and give BFS another important victory in the ISAL League. Junior point guard Julia G. had 5 assists, sophomore Julia B. finished with 9 points, and numerous rebounds as she continues to play extremely well, seniors Herron H and Danielle played very strong games. Danielle had a career high 7 blocks. Seniors Rayvin T. and HY did a great job coming off the bench. It was another team effort. Back to practice tomorrow. Next league game on Friday versus Bay Ridge Prep in our own Battle of Brooklyn. Blue Pride!!
On Thursday the BFS Boys JV Basketball team defeated Avenues 56-43 on the road to pick up their ninth win of the season. Freshman guard Anthony B. led the team in scoring pouring in 26 points. Anthony got to the basket when he wanted by slicing through Avenue’s defense. Fellow freshman guard Quran D. scored 12 points, including 3 three pointers. BFS went on a twelve to five run during the final quarter to close out their opponent.
The BFS MS Boys Basketball team defeated LREI 31-28 in the lower gym to continue their winning ways. Eighth grader Philip C. led the way with 12 pts, fellow eighth graders Charlie S. had 9 points, Rocco B. had 8 points (both season highs) and Julien S-B chipped in with a basket. The win is the team’s sixth in a row and seventh overall. They are now 5-0 in the ISAL league. Next up for the team is a league game at Churchill on the 31st. Their next home game is on February 5th vs Bay Ridge Prep. Come out and support the team!!
On Friday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated Bay Ridge Prep 42-33 in the lower gym in their own battle of Brooklyn. It was the teams third win of the week and their sixth in a row. The girls have been playing some pretty good basketball during the month of January. After trailing 4-0 BFS never looked back even though they only had seven of nine players available, some available players were a little injured or sick, and they dealt with foul trouble most of the game. Senior Janna J. got off to a good start despite a stiff neck. She finished the first quarter with 8 points, including one three pointer. After one quarter of play BFS led 8-6. Janna continued her solid play during the second quarter picking 4 more points and junior point guard Julia G. knocked down a three pointer to give BFS a 15-11 halftime lead. The offense opened up for both teams during the third, but BFS outscored BRP 15-11 to give the team a 30-22 lead. Janna had 11 points in the quarter. Coach talked about getting other players involved on the offensive end and that is exactly what happened as BFS got some much needed scoring from senior Herron H. who had a nice basket and fellow senior Rayvin T. who stepped up on the defense end to help guard one of BRP’s stronger players and added a nice basket of her own on a baseline floater. The start of the fourth quarter belonged to BFS as Janna continued her scoring with 8 more points, and Herron got to the foul line a couple of times and connected on a couple free throws, and Julia G. added a driving lay up. BFS found itself now up comfortably 40-26 with less than three minutes to play. Coach decided to rest Janna and Danielle who were a little banged up and had four fouls each. The team managed to close the game out despite committing too many late fouls which stopped the clock and enabled BRP to close things to seven with less than a minute to play. BFS closed the game out and enjoyed their great week of play. With the win BFS is now 9-2 in the ISAL League and 12-3 overall. Janna poured in another game high/season high 31 points (career 822), including six steals, despite the stiff neck and foul trouble. It was another team effort. Senior Rayvin, Hanyang K. and junior Chloe B. stepped up to play some solid minutes for BFS. The girls are encouraged to rest, relax, get healthy, and watch some basketball over the weekend as they gear up for the final two weeks of the regular season…then the playoffs!!
