On Tuesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated LREI 38-34 on the road to clinch a high seed home playoff game this Friday. With the win the team improved to 16-4 overall and 13-2 in league play. The team will take on York Prep in their final regular season game to determine first place. BFS continued its strong play. Senior Janna J. and sophomore Julia B. got off to strong starts as they scored ten total points during the first quarter (Janna had seven). LREI plays well at home and kept pace with BFS as the first quarter finished in a 10-10 tie. The second quarter was much of the same. Janna scored five points, Julia B. and senior Herron H. each added two points a piece for BFS. The team found themselves up 19-17 at the break. The coach told them that basically with a win we would host a playoff game on Friday, with a loss we would have to come back to LREI to face them again at their place on Friday. The girls played a strong third quarter as Janna added five more points and Julia B. had two more points. Junior guard Julia G gave BFS another highlight as she calmly knocked down a halfcourt three pointer to close out the third quarter and give BFS the 29-22 lead. LREI would not go away. They kept fighting back with strong defense and some good outside shooting. BFS was able to open up a 36-29 lead in the final two minutes, but LREI caught fire and BFS tightened up. A few mistakes here and there and BFS found themselves up only two points at 36-24 for seconds to play. BFS couldn’t capitalize on a few close shots and some free throws so they had to hold their breathe and hope for the best. With 3.9 seconds left BFS once gain was fouled and went to the line where they missed the first free. The second free throw was also a miss, but sophomore Julia B. who has been playing some really good basketball grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to give BFS the comfortable four point lead. LREI had one last shot that rimmed out. BFS wins again. The fab five Janna, Herron, Danielle, Julia G., and Julia B. were awesome in the victory. Janna finished with a game high a game high 21 points. That gives her 918 total points for her career with three games left. Julia B. finished with 11 points, while Herron and Julia G. each had 3 points a piece for BFS. The team will now host a home playoff game this Friday against TBA. First they will travel back into the city today to take on York Prep for first place. Blue Pride!!
The BFS MS Boys Basketball team got back to its winning ways as they defeated Bay Ridge Prep 27-17 at home. After suffering their worst loss of the season the team was motivated and showed it early as they took a 9-3 first quarter lead. The lead continued to grow in the second quarter and lBFS found themselves up 20-5 at the half time break. The team continued to play hard in the second half and maintained the lead finishing with a nice ten point win. By holding BRP to 17, the Panthers held an opponent under 20 for the fifth time this season. The team was led in scoring by eighth grader Philip C. who scored 14. Fellow eighth graders Julien S-B scored a season high 7 points, Rocco B. had 4 and Charlie S. scored chipped in with 2 points. Although he only scored 2 he lead the team, Charlie had arguably his best game of the season. He led the way with numerous assists and made good decisions while breaking the press which led to easy baskets for his teammates. Next up for the team, high scoring Lycée Frances on Thursday on the road.
On Wednesday the BFS Boys Varsity Basketball team
defeated Leman Prep 34-28 on the road. BFS came away with a hard fought victory and a much needed win. Junior Nathan J. and senior Jared L. both led the way in scoring with 9 points a piece. Junior Adam G. scored 7 points. Jared and Nathan were active on the court, with Jared grabbing 11 rebounds and Nathan grabbing 8 rebounds while picking up 4 steals. The Panthers had a nice surge off the bench from junior guard Sayeed J., who scored 5 points and had 4 rebounds. The play of the game came from senior Misha H., he grabbed a rebound passed it ahead to Olabanji S., who throw and alley-oop for Jared L., for the slam dunk. BFS gathered momentum and with the leadership or senior guard Avery, and juniors Nathan and Adam, BFS held on to win the game.The BFS Boys JV Basketball team
defeated Leman Prep 48-36 to pick up their twelfth win of the season. Without two starters, freshman guard Anthony B. and sophomore forward Thomas C. BFS managed to pick up the impressive victory. After being tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, BFS went on to outscore their opponent 24 to 12 during the second quarter and 17 to 5 during the third quarter. Freshman guard Quran D. led the way with 19 points, including 6 three pointers. Freshmen Henry J. and Omar M. scored for the first time this season. Blue Pride!!
The BFS MS Girls Basketball team got back to their winning ways with an impressive 21-12 win over Steiner, after losing their previous two. The team had the wonderful opportunity of playing on a college court at Pace University. The Lady Panthers were paced by eighth graders Halima M. who had 15 points, Hannah B. who had 4 points, and Noami B. who chipped in with 2 points. The game was very close during the first half with the score 4-2 after one quarter of play and a second quarter that went back and forth leaving BFS with a 13-10 lead at halftime. The Lady Panthers stepped up their defense in the second half, mainly the third quarter in which they blanked their opponent and took a lead 19-10 after three quarters. That was all the cushion BFS needed cruising to a 21-12 final. The Middle Girls are now 5-3 with two games remaining. Lets get these last 2 wins and finish strong, great effort team!!
The BFS MS Girls Basketball team made it back to back wins in back to back days with a 23-15 win of LFNY in the lower gym. The another close game during the first two quarters with the score being tied 9-9 halftime score. But like the lady panthers have done all season they come out strong in the third quarter out scoring LFNY 12-2. The BFS lady panthers were relentless on defense during the second half of the game by only giving up 6 points. The main scoring for BFS was done by eighth grader Halima M. who had 16 points, seventh grader Issa R. finished with 5 points, while eighth grader Naomi M. chipped in with 2 points. Great team effort by all the middle school girls, bringing their season record to 6-3 with one game to play Monday. Come on lady panthers let’s make it lucky number 7!!
