On Tuesday the BFS Boys Varsity Baseball team defeated Waldorf 9-8 down at Red Hook to pick up their first win of the season. A gritty effort brings home the Varsity Baseball teams first win of the season. It took a total team effort to comeback from deficits twice during the game. The boys fell behind 4-0 in the first inning. In the bottom of the first the Panthers had nine consecutive batters reach base to score seven runs of their own to take a 7-4 lead. Waldorf would go on to score two runs in the second and one in the third to tie the game at seven. With the bases loaded in the third and the score tied the Panthers went to the bullpen and team ace Misha H. (sr). The first batter Misha faced hit a fielder’s choice grounder to shortstop driving in a runner from third and Waldorf took an 8-7 lead. The grounder was significant because it would be the only batter to make contact against Misha. Misha went on to strike out the next 11 batters in a row. While Misha did his best to keep BFS in the game, it took some late game heroics from unexpected sources to tie the game and take the lead in the Panthers’ final at bat. In the bottom of the fifth with daylight fading Tim W. (sr) lead off the inning with a line drive single. Tim’s work done, he was replaced by pinch runner Jose U. (sr). Jose advanced to second base on a wild pitch. With Jose on second Henry J. (fr) laid down a perfect bunt to advance the runner to third. After a strikeout the tying run was at third with two out and Avery M (sr) was at the plate. Avery hit a slow grounder up the middle. Avery’s terrific speed rushed the second baseman causing him to hurry and forcing a game tying error. The next batter Eric G. (so) hit a hard single to send Avery all the way to third. With the go ahead run on third BFS forced the action as Eric took off to steal second on the first pitch to the next batter. As the catcher attempted to throw him out, Avery broke for home and scored on a close play to take a 9-8 lead. In the next inning Misha completed his 11 consecutive strikeout run, by striking out the side to end the game.
