Dear Lower School Families:
In an effort to further embrace and support Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School, we are participating in our 8th Annual Horizons Reading Challenge, founded by BFS parents Lauryn Small and Pam Kiernan. With your help and service, we exceeded our goal last year of $35,000 and were able to raise close to $50,000 to support our Horizons students! This year, we have set a goal to raise $40,000to support our incoming Horizons familiesand are inviting all Lower School students and families to join us in this completely voluntary service effort.
This year the Horizon’s Reading Challenge will begin on January 29 and ends on February 29 – Leap Year! Horizons at BFS will also host our second annual Read-a-Palooza event on Saturday, February 22nd, where BFS students and Horizons students can come together to read towards their goals and have read-alongs with guest authors. The deadline to register for the Reading Challenge is Wednesday, January 29th.
Children will set a goal for how many books they will read within the timeframe of the Reading Challenge. They can read independently, or with a parent or caregiver. Family and friends are asked to sponsor the student’s reading efforts by making a donation. Each participant will have their own donation page, powered by the organization 99Pledges: See sample page. All funds raised will support the cost of sending a child to Horizons for the summer, approximately $3,500 per child.
Not only is the Horizons Reading Challenge a great way to support the Horizons Program, it is also a wonderful way to get your child excited about reading. Your participation will provide a platform for concrete discussions with your child about the Horizons program and the children it serves, as well as reinforce the aspect of service so central to the BFS mission.
For additional information about the Horizons Reading Challenge and to sign-up for participation, please visit https://brooklynfriends.org/horizons/hrc2020/ or stop by the information table in the lobby during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up from January 22 through January 29,2020. Parents who participated in the Reading Challenge last year will be there to share their experiences.
We hope to see you in the lobby! In the meantime, please visit the Horizons website here for more information about the program.
