The Brooklyn Friends School athletic program welcomes Don Hovey to the faculty and staff as our Certified Athletic Trainer, effective Aug. 1, 2012. Certified Athletic Trainers are health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. Don will be working part-time with our athletic Director, David Gardella, School Nurse, Mary Ellen Ostrander, and with student-athletes in grades 7-12, attending practices and games to handle injuries and follow-up.
Don Hovey, ATC, received his BA from the University of New Hampshire in History and Health, his M.Ed from New York University in Sports Medicine and Fitness Management and his MS from Long Island University in Sports Sciences-Athletic Training. For the last 18 years he has been the Director of Sports Medicine at St. Francis College.
Don started his career working as an international teacher in Iran, Greece, Cyprus, and as a teacher at Friends Seminary in New York City. During his time in New York, he moved into the realm of Sports Medicine by interning with the New York Jets while working on his Masters at NYU, he then worked with Hofstra University and Long Island University developing his specialization in Sports Medicine through Athletic Training. In addition to his work at St. Francis College, he also has had professional experience working with the Empire State Games, Dalton School, The Brooklyn Aviators (an FHL professional hockey team), SUNY Downstate Medical College, and the Hofstra University Athletic Training Staff .
