Used Books: Your Trash, Our Treasure!

Getting ready to start a little Spring cleaning at home?  We hope you’ll consider cleaning out your bookshelves!  The BFS Friends of the Library parent volunteers are organizing our 2nd Annual Used Book Sale.

You’ve got questions?  We’ve got answers…

Who can shop at the Used Book Sale?
Everyone! The Used Book Sale will have something for all readers from babies to adults.  All members of the community are welcome.  Tell your family and friends all about it.

When and where can I find it?
The Used Book Sale will be located on the sidewalk of 375 Pearl Street.  We’ll announce an alternate location in case of rain.  The Used Book Sale will be open for business on Thursday, May 16th & Friday, May 17th from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Can I donate my used books?
Yes!  We are now accepting donations of used books in GOOD CONDITION.  If you have books that  have writing, marks, torn or missing pages, water damage, etc. please recycle those.  You can drop off all gently used books at the drop box in the Pearl Street lobby by the elevators or at the MS/US Library on the 3rd floor.  Update: We are at capacity and no longer accepting book donations.  However, we will continue to use volunteers for help sorting books and working on day(s) of the sale.  See below for volunteer info.

What happens to the books that don’t get sold?
At the end of the sale, any books that don’t get sold will be shipped to Better World Books.  This organization attempts to sell any books we donate and they recycle the books they cannot sell.  For all books BWB sells, BFS gets a small percentage of the sale and the non-profit literacy organization of our choice also gets a small percentage of the sale.  It’s a good thing!

Where does the money from the Used Book Sale go?
All proceeds of the Used Book Sale will benefit Library programming at BFS.  The money raised at the sale will allow the librarians to pay for author and illustrator visits to all divisions as well as any extra-budgetary needs that will enhance the library experiences of our students.  (Thanks, Friends of the Library!)

I like helping out with books and libraries.  Who can I contact if I want to volunteer?
Parent volunteers will be sorting donated books in the 3rd floor library on Friday, April 19th, April 26th, May 3rd, and May 10th from 8:30am to 10:30am.  Parents interested in sorting books and/or “working the sale” can email FOL co-chair, Katie B. at bednark_nyc[at]yahoo.com.  MS Librarian, Angie U. will be organizing student volunteers.  You can email her at aungaro[at]brooklynfriends.org if you have questions.
