On Monday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team finally played a consistent game against a good opponent. They defeated Bay Ridge Prep 2-0 (25-19,25-13) in the upper gym. Everyone who played contributed to the game. Co-captains Herron H. and Anna M., led the offense with 6 kills combined kills; Herron also added 5 service aces. Tyler C. and Caroline C. had a consistent transitional game, combining for 7 assists. The defense stepped up their game as well, making sure the ball didn’t hit the floor on our side. Sarah M., Chloe B., Sidney A., Sofia S., and Taty R. all played very aggressively. The net was well guarded by our two middle blockers, Abby M. and Fiona S.
The BFS Girls Varsity Soccer team bounced back from their defeat to Packer on Friday with a resounding 6-0 victory over Lawrence Woodmere Academy down at Red Hook. The entire roster contributed with an impressive performance. Two goals from Halima M. and Aoife H., and one each from Clara S. and Hannah H. took the score to six goals. Hannah provided three assists as well, Halima had two, and Olivia P. added an assist for BFS. The team looked good in possession and are now 2-1-1 on the young season. The team is looking forward to its next game on Friday.
The BFS Boys Varsity Soccer team won their third game in a row. It was another hard fought game by the boys who played Bay Ridge Prep. They showed great effort to come out with the late victory. After going down one goal, senior captain Misha H. showed great pace to run onto a Lucas M. (sophomore) through ball to even things up. Misha would add to his goal tally by connecting on a penalty kick. With the game tied at 2-2 nd only about ten minutes or so left, Misha took over. He went on a gritty one man run taking on four defenders to tuck the ball away for his hat-trick. Lucas showing great vision found Misha again with a long ball over the Bay Ridge Prep defenders for his fourth goal of the game. Freshman Noah W. would get himself involved by winning a tackle in the middle of the park to then play Misha through for his milestone fifth goal of the game (second time this season with 5 goals in a game). Honorable Mentions: Freshmen Omar M, Henry J., and sophomore goalie Thomas C.
The BFS MS Girls Volleyball team had a fantastic start to the match and even a better finish. It was a real team effort as they defeated York Prep on the road 2-1 (24-26, 25-10, 15-11). The girls all seem to grasp the understanding on communication and were determine to stay focused throughout the match. They played relaxed and remained composed throughout. There was a lot of team spirit shown by the girls. It was an impressive road win. Congrats to the girls, job well done.
The BFS Boys Varsity Cross Country team was led by senior Jose U. who finished well, along with sophomore Marcus A. who ran a gutsy race (28.17). There were 76 total runners in the boys division. The BFS Girls Varsity Cross Country team was led by Sophomore Giovanna M. who continues to put forth strong performances in the league meets. She finished with a time of 25.36, good for 7th place. Sophomore Maya K. ran a time of 31:30; she finished in 31st place out of 39 total runners.
The BFS MS Boys Cross Country team runners continue to show commitment and dedication and it is paying dividends. Eighth grader Miles N. won his second race in a row on the young season. He is becoming a confident and strong runner. Miles improved his time by over two minutes in only his second cross country race (8.02). He is the iron man on the team by only missing one practice. His improvement is a nice reward for his commitment and dedication. Fellow eighth grader Emmitt S. returned to the top of the pack with a smart ambitious race. He ran a time of 9.34 good for 8th place. Seventh grader Milo H. ran a time of 11.31 and finished in 23rd place out of 27 total runners.
On Thursday the BFS MS Soccer team bounced back from a defeat earlier in the week with a convincing 4-1 win against York Prep down at Red Hook. Despite dominating the first half, BFS went into halftime a goal down, having been caught out by a rare attack from the opposition. However, BFS regrouped well and it wasn’t long before the score was even. After an incisive pass by eighth grader Mail A., seventh grader Peter H. was through on goal to tie it up at the 35 minute mark. BFS maintained the pressure and took the lead when eighth grader Julian S-B beat the York Prep goalie in the 40th minute for his first goal of the season. This time, Peter H. turned provider to set up Julian with defense splitting pass. Peter H. scored his second of the game a few minutes later (50th minute), assisted by Matthew R. and Mali finished emphatically from another pass from Peter (56th minute) to round off a great day for the BFS MS Soccer team. Blue Pride!!
On Friday the BFS Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated LREI 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) in the upper gym. After a very inconsistent start, falling behind 5-1, the team took a time out to regroup. They responded very well, taking control of the match to win in two straight sets. Once again the team showed some signs of greatness, showing great mental focus and determination to beat a consistent team. Our co-captains Herron H. and Anna M. did a great job leading the team offensively and defensively. Middle blockers Abby M. and Fiona S. showed some improvement in the middle, adjusting their blocking and offense. The rest of the team contributed with their determination and intense overall play. This was a good way for the team to regroup and complete the week, after Thursday’s disappointing and inconsistent display. Looking forward to next week.

BFS scored 3 goals in the first 13 minutes and finished the 1st half up 4-1. BFS could have scored more if it wasn’t for the the crossbar, hit twice, from two long distance shots. Both teams played through some heavy rain showers in the 2nd half and BFS extended their lead to 6-1 before the final whistle. Halima M. scored 4 goals, and Hannah H. and Olivia P. each had a goal for BFS. Julia G., Hannah, Aoife H., and Halima picked up assists. The girls are looking forward to next weeks games.
The BFS Boys Varsity Soccer team finished the week with a 8-3 win over Elizabeth Irwin down at Red Hook. That is four and a row for the team, which improves to 4-1 on the season. BFS led 5-0 at the half. Senior captain Misha H. continued his goal scoring form scoring six goals, yes six goals in this game. This was Misha’s third game of the season with at least five goals. There is talk that Misha will make a run at some of Coach Edson’s (’03) BFS records. Sophomore Lucas M. and senior Theo E. each had a goal for BFS. Honorable Mentions: sophomore Thomas Chamberlain (Goalie), freshman Henry K. and senior Alex D-L.
