Game Highlights for Week of Dec. 3, 2012

12/5/12

On Tuesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated Steiner 37-13 at Pace University to improve to 3-1 on the young season.  BFS went down 2-0, then scored the next eight points to close out the first quarter up 8-2.

The ball movement was great (we still missed too many shots, easy shots to start the game).  Junior Julia G. had four first quarter points.  Seniors Danielle E. and Herron H. each chipped in with a basket.  BFS scored eleven more points in the second quarter while holding Steiner to just a three pointer.  BFS hit 3 three pointers in the quarter, one by senior Sidney A. who has really improved her overall game (especially on the offensive side of the ball), Senior Janna J., and Sophomore Julia B. each had a three pointer.  BFS turned things up in the third quarter as Herron was able to break free and receive some quality passes as she scored three easy lay-ups on the break totaling 6 points, and Sidney played her best quarter as BFS Basketball player, she was all over the place on both ends of the court scoring on a driving layup in traffic and knocking down another three pointer.  Janna chipped in another basket as she didn’t play much while recovering from last Thursday’s ankle injury.

BFS played a solid fourth quarter and a solid overall game.  Danielle knocked down a nice three pointer during the final quarter and senior Hanyang K. scored her first basket of the season as she gets back into things after her performance in a school musical.  Senior Sidney A. led the way with a career best eight points, including two three pointers.  Senior Herron H. also had a great game scoring 8 points, senior Janna J. picked up 7 points, senior Danielle E. had 5 points, junior Julia G. had 4 points, sophomore Julia B. had 3 points, senior Hanyang K. chipped in with 2 points.

The BFS Boys JV Basketball team defeated Mary McDowell 66-44 in the lower gym.  After being tied 10-10 after one quarter of play, BFS poured in 18 points in the second quarter to open things up.
Mary McDowell kept it close early but BFS played great defense and kept them to only seven points in the second quarter.  Freshmen Anthony B. and Quran D. led the way with 18 and 13 points respectively.  Sophomore Adam W. had 16 points.  The Panthers fast pace offense has been able to run teams out of the gym, averaging 61 points in their last 3 games.

12/6/12

On Wednesday the BFS Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated Garden 35-27 in the lower gym.  BFS got off to a slow start but picked things up in the second quarter scoring 9 points and holding Garden to one point.  Senior Janna J. had 8 points in the quarter.  BFS once again played a strong third quarter.  Janna and fellow senior Danielle E. each had 4 points, senior Herron H. and sophomore Julia B. each chipped in with two points during the quarter.  Herron had one of here best games ever as she poured in a career high 14 points including 8 in the 4th q as BFS picked up another league win, its second in the week.  Janna finished with 12 points, 3 steals, and a block.

The BFS Boys Varsity Basketball team traveled to Jackson Heights, Queens to face the Garden School. The Panthers were able to pull away with a 60-51 win.  BFS trailed by as much as 17 points in the third quarter but the Panthers defensive started to turn the game around.  BFS out scored Garden 27-9 in the final quarter.  Junior Nathan J., led all scorers with 29 points including 13 points in the 4th quarter alone.  He also had 6 rebounds and 6 steals.  Fellow junior Adam G., scored 16 points knocking down 4 three pointers and while grabbing 7 rebounds.

The defensive pressure of seniors Avery M., and Olabanji S., set the tone of the 2nd half.  Avery scored 9 points and 4 rebounds and Olabanji had 2 points, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds.  The Panthers had 16 steals as a team.

The BFS Varsity Boys & Girls Indoor Track teams headed up to the 168th Armory for their first meet of the season.  Senior Jose U. had a break through and ran a time of 42.89 good for 15th place in the 300m out of 38 total runners. This is almost a full two second improvement from last year.  Junior Elinor H. ran a time of 51.81 (right where she was last year) good for 24th place in the 300m out of 47 total runners.  This is good news. They were both pleased with their results and glad they participated in the meet.  Blue Pride!!

12/8/12
On Friday the BFS Boys JV Basketball team defeated St. Ann’s 67-44 on the road.  BFS struggled in the first quarter defensively keeping St. Ann’s at the freethrow line.  St. Ann’s led by two after one quarter of play.  Despite further foul trouble in the second quarter, BFS out scored St. Ann’s 24 to 10.  That run seemed to be the difference maker in the game.  BFS then went on another ten point run early in the 4th quarter to seal the deal.  Leading the way for the Panthers was freshman Anthony B. with 27 points, scoring 11 of them in the 4th.  Fellow freshman Quran D. wasn’t far behind scoring 22 points, knocking down 4 three pointers, three of them coming during the 2nd quarter.  The two freshmen combined for 49 of Friends’ 67 points.  The team continues to score the basketball and picks up another victory along the way.  Blue Pride!!
