Kate Minear, 3 & 4 Grade Math Learning Specialist, is doing a series of evening information sessions about 3rd and 4th grade math this year. Each session will be focused on a question that commonly comes up at math coffee hours. She is hoping this format will allow you to select the topics that are of most interest to you– you can choose just one session or you can attend several. Each session will run from 5:00 – 5:45 (students can drop into Afterschool.)
“Tell Me More About What Math Class Looks Like”
Your child spends an hour each school day working on math– one class can often include playing strategic games, collaborating with a partner on a challenging problem, contributing to a math discussion, and doing independent practice. I’ll give you a window into what a typical math class looks like, using samples of student work and videos of the class.
“Tell Me More About Differentiation in Math”
We work very hard to make sure every child feels both confident and challenged during math class. I’ll explain how we plan a unit to make sure each child progresses in their math thinking, and share some examples of my favorite challenge problems.
“Tell Me More About Doing Math with My Child at Home”
I’ll share ideas about how to help with homework, how to give your child extra practice on challenging skills, and how to bring math into daily life in fun ways.
“Tell Me More About Fractions and Decimals”
Fractions and decimals are an important topic in 3rd and 4th grade. I’ll share the concepts we cover and how we help build understanding.
